Our Work

ARTUZ Focus Areas

Building Power. Defending Education. Fighting for Justice.

ARTUZ exists to organise teachers into a force that can defend their rights and transform the education system. Our work is focused, deliberate, and driven by the realities teachers face every day.

We are not observers. We act.

ARTUZ Focus Areas for Effective and Accessible Education

Organising & Membership Growth
Building a Strong, United Union

A union is only as strong as its members. ARTUZ is focused on building a nationwide network of organised teachers across both rural and urban Zimbabwe.

We recruit, mobilise, and support teachers to stand together and act collectively. Through district structures and grassroots organising, we ensure that every member has a voice and a role in the movement.

When teachers are organised, they are no longer isolated—they become a force.

Living Wage Campaign

Fighting for Salaries That Match the Cost of Living

Teachers cannot deliver quality education while living in poverty. ARTUZ is leading the fight for salaries that reflect the real cost of survival.

The gap between earnings and the Poverty Datum Line is unacceptable. This campaign pushes for immediate salary adjustments and long-term mechanisms that protect workers from inflation and economic instability.

This is not just about wages—it is about dignity.

Labour Rights & Legal Protection

Defending the Right to Organise and Speak

Teachers must be free to organise, speak out, and defend their rights without fear.

ARTUZ works to protect members from victimisation, unfair labour practices, and repression. The union also pushes for stronger labour protections and respect for collective bargaining.

Without rights, there is no union. Without a union, there is no protection.

Leadership & Capacity Building

Training Teachers to Lead

Strong movements are built by strong leaders. ARTUZ invests in developing teachers who can organise, mobilise, and lead change in their communities.

Through training programmes and leadership schools, the union equips members with the skills needed to defend their rights and build the movement.

Leadership is not reserved for a few—it is built across the union.

Education Justice & Policy Advocacy

Fighting for a Better Education System

The crisis in education is not only about teachers—it affects learners, families, and the future of the country.

ARTUZ advocates for policies that strengthen public education, improve school conditions, and ensure that every learner has access to quality teaching.

A broken system cannot deliver quality outcomes. Fixing education starts with fixing the conditions of those who deliver it.

Communication & Movement Building
Amplifying the Voice of Teachers

A strong union must be heard.

ARTUZ invests in communication systems that connect members, inform the public, and build national and international solidarity. The union ensures that the realities facing teachers are visible and cannot be ignored.

Silence benefits no one. Visibility builds pressure.

Solidarity & Partnerships

Building Power Beyond the Classroom

The struggles of teachers are connected to the struggles of other workers.

ARTUZ works with sister unions, civil society organisations, and regional and international partners to strengthen collective action and push for broader social and economic justice.

Change becomes possible when movements connect.

Research & Evidence

Exposing the Reality

Facts matter. ARTUZ documents the lived realities of teachers and uses evidence to strengthen its advocacy.

By producing reports and research, the union ensures that policy debates are grounded in real experiences, not assumptions.

Evidence turns lived experience into undeniable truth.

Call to Action Section

This Work Depends on You

None of this happens without organised teachers. ARTUZ is growing because teachers are refusing to accept the current situation. Every new member strengthens the union and increases its ability to fight and win. If you believe in dignity for teachers and a stronger education system, there is a place for you in this movement.
