The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) commemorates International Human Rights Day under the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.” This day marks the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a historic commitment to uphold dignity and equality for all. Yet, in Zimbabwe, the state of human rights remains deeply concerning.

Human rights are under attack in our country. Teachers, activists, and even children have been victims of violations, including unlawful arrests, detentions, and lack of fair trials. ARTUZ leaders and members have suffered at the hands of a government that seems unwilling to honor its obligations to protect fundamental rights.

Targeting of Activists: ARTUZ Secretary General Robson Chere endured 35 days in pre-trial detention at Chikurubi Maximum Prison under fabricated charges. Obert Masaraure, the ARTUZ President, has faced relentless persecution, including unfounded criminal charges. Recently, the National Prosecuting Authority withdrew murder charges against him and Robson Chere, highlighting the government’s misuse of the legal system to silence dissent.

Arrest of Schoolgirl Nicolle Chabata: Nicolle was arrested for attending a private gathering commemorating the Day of the African Child. Her detention disrupted her education and violated her right to assemble, a right enshrined in Zimbabwe’s constitution.

Teachers’ Plight: The government has failed to pay teachers a salary above the poverty datum line, denying them a fair livelihood. This financial hardship has left teachers struggling to feed their families, forcing many to abandon their profession.
ARTUZ believes that respect for human rights is critical for the future of our nation.

The government must:
1) Uphold the rule of law and ensure fair trials for all.
2) End persecution of activists and teachers.
3) Compensate workers fairly, starting with a salary above the poverty line for teachers.
4) Respect the constitutional rights of all Zimbabweans, including the right to assemble.

As we commemorate Human Rights Day, ARTUZ urges all Zimbabweans to stand together for a future built on justice, dignity, and equality. The time to act is now.
