At the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), our work is rooted in the daily struggles of teachers and learners across Zimbabwe. We combine advocacy, organising, research, and solidarity to fight for an education system that is just, inclusive, and dignified. Our work is guided by our five strategic pillars: Labour Justice, Inclusive Access to Education, Defending Democracy, Equitable Resource Governance, and Solidarity.
We lead bold campaigns demanding:
A living wage of USD $1,260 for all teachers.
Free, compulsory, quality education for every child.
The #SafeSchools Campaign — keeping politicians and violence out of schools.
Labour law reforms to guarantee the right to organise, strike, and bargain collectively.
Through public actions, petitions, and media advocacy, we make sure teachers’ voices are heard.
Teachers in Zimbabwe face harassment, arrests, and persecution simply for demanding their rights. With the support of our partners, we:
Provide legal representation for victimised teachers.
Document and expose human rights abuses.
We produce evidence to strengthen our advocacy.
Tracks the state of education and labour rights.
Highlights inequalities between rural and urban schools.
At the core of ARTUZ is teacher power. We build grassroots structures across provinces and districts to:
Mobilise teachers for collective action.
Create solidarity networks with unions, parents, and learners.
Through our work, ARTUZ has:
Exposed injustices in education funding.
Resisted attacks on union rights and democracy.
Stood firm in courts, winning key battles for labour justice.
Mobilised teachers and communities in solidarity campaigns that demand accountability from the state.
